Women Painting Women: In Earnest

A Traveling Museum Exhibition

I'm honored to have my painting The Seamstress, included in the show. The list of artists includes many whose work I admire and have followed for as long as I've been doing this professionally, so pinch me, I must be dreaming.

Curators’ Statement

Women Painting Women: In Earnest is an exhibition that honors the human spirit and shares the thoughtful and unique vision of 34 artists who explore the complexity of being a woman today. Each artist looks beyond the surface of her subject, beyond mere replication of the physical world before her, in search of deeper realities. These artists have found a freedom to avoid voyeuristic depictions of the female form to examine honest and sometimes personal narratives about the struggles and resilience of the indomitable contemporary woman. With a sincere conviction to their craft, these artists raise such ideas as role association and identity, fragility with dignity, and emotional complexity to engage the viewer. Our hope as curators is that this exhibition will elicit an emotional response or unexpected connection that grants access to a greater depth of experience for both artist and viewer. As a noun, the word earnest can mean “a promise of what is to come." Indeed, these artists serve as the bellwethers at a time in history when women have the freedom to define how we see ourselves.

Do women paint women differently than men? The WPW movement is giving us a chance to see these paintings in a collective way and an opportunity to contemplate the question.

I have painted a male model wearing this superhero shirt many times but never painted a woman wearing it before.

This is one of those paintings that for me began as a story inspired by an individual and personal story but has transcended into a universal theme.

The model is my daughter, Carly. Rather than wait for her time to come, this young heroine is taking her destiny in hand. Who doesn't want to be a superhero? ‘Tis better to create her own reality, even though at times it may feel as though she’s holding it all together with safety pins. She can be in charge and look feminine and sexy as hell at the same time.

Women Painting Women and Pay It Forward

Principle Gallery, Alexandria, VA presents Pay It Forward: 2014

Five years after the first Women Painting Women blog began, the WPW concept is alive and well.

Matter Deep Publishing Catalog: Preview or Buy.
Cover painting by Mia Bergeron
The scope of the movement is evolving with this year’s exhibits:

~Pay It Forward, Principle Gallery, Alexandria, VA, is an exhibition in which the group and gallery are further pushing the ideals of WPW. New artists have been nominated to exhibit, all painting genres highlighted, and 10% of sales will go to a charity of the collectors choice, thus engaging artist, gallery and collector in the act of paying it forward. You may see a preview of the show HERE.

Excerpt from Principle Gallery exhibit statement from the catalog:

In 2014 we will continue to celebrate the modern female artist, and this year we chose to highlight works touching on all genres: figurative and portraiture, still life, as well as landscape.  This incorporation of new subjects allows for us to fully display the mastery of talent that can be found in today’s female artists.  Using the title Pay it Forward, we want to highlight the new artists who have been invited to show with us for this iteration of WPW shows.  Some of the original artists and those from (R)evolution  have paid their “place” in the exhibition forward to a new name, which allows the group’s membership to grow and thus further promotes exposure and recognition of women as painters.

Excerpt from the catalog, exhibition statement by Alia El-Bermani, Co-Founder of Women Painting Women:

We are hopeful that the cumulative effect of this Pay it Forward exhibition inspires others in the art world and beyond to build a better, stronger community of artists. As the saying goes, “a rising tide lifts all boats.” Increased awareness of and appreciation of our fellow artists – built by sharing opportunities – will help foster a generous, supportive, and collegial art world.

I'm so pleased to have two pieces in this show.

The Art Innovation of the Year Award!

Women Painting Women continues to be an inspirational movement!

The group received two awards from Katherine Tyrrell's Making a Mark Blog. If you don't know her massively popular blog check it out. It is listed as #14 in the top 75 art blogs. Katherine recognized the WPW and the innovation of print on demand publishing as being game changers for the art world.

The Art Innovation of the Year Award is for the group's production of the Women Painting Women: (R)evolution catalog produced by Matter Deep Publishing and designed by Carly Strickland for the WPW show at Principle Gallery in Alexandria, VA in Sept, 2013.
The Art Innovation of the Year Award is awarded to highlight those artist bloggers who experiment and/or create and/or share innovations which help the practice of other artists.

The sharing may be through:
• the invention of a new tool or art medium to aid artists
• testing and reviewing a new art medium or material
• experiments with existing or new art media, materials or equipment and the creation of                           a new way of doing things

Making a Mark writes:

The Women Painting Women group... used HP's Magcloud to enable potential collectors to buy either print and online versions of their catalogue for the Women Painting Women (R)evolution exhibition. It's a novel way of enabling people to access a catelogue without having to spend a lot of money - because MagCloud works on the basis of a call off production.  They priced the digital catalogue at $5.99 - a figure which won't phase most collectors.

Of course, we at Matter Deep Publishing are very excited to hear about the award!  Print on demand and digital publishing are great business tools and formats that we whole-heartily embrace.
Catalog available in digital or print.
The second award for the WPW is:

Making a Mark writes:
What the women had planned for 2013 fell only a little short of world domination! In the end, in 2013, the project organized and held SEVEN concurrent exhibitions and went international. Where do they go from here? Some National Portrait Gallery has got to pick them up at some point surely?

"This is an art blog project which started with an admirable set of values, achieved its goals and then changed up a gear and created a significant movement amongst painters. In all of this the art blog has proved a valuable tool for showcasing the work of various women artists and providing a place of reference and an accessible identity for their work.

Thank you Making a Mark again for recognizing the Women Painting Women and Print on Demand as being game changers for the art world!

Women Painting Women:(R)evolution, Self Portrait with Beard

Count down to Friday, Sept 20, 2013 opening at Principle Gallery, Alexandria, VA!

I'm so pleased that I have three paintings in this show. Here's the first one. (the other 2 will be in subsequent blog posts)

I've been journaling this idea for a while and trying to figure out a way to do it properly. It started with the oft repeated sentiment "It's man's world." When designing pieces for this show on the theme of Women Painting Women: (R)evolution I knew it was time to explore this concept.

Women have been a main subject in art as far back in history as any of us can think.  And yet that subject has predominantly been presented from the perspective of male artists.  Women Painting Women (the blog, the exhibitions as well as our small group) has continually tried to feature and promote paintings that share a different perspective.  We frequently wonder - do women see themselves differently?  Are women artists representing a bit more of what it means to be a woman, in the art that they create?  We argue that women are not merely eye candy or decorative fodder.  We seek to promote the work of figurative painters that share these more varied and complex views of women. ~Alia El-Bermani on behalf of the Women Painting Women group

Women Painting Women Call for Works!

Richard J Demato Fine Arts Gallery in Sag Harbor, New York is doing a WPW show and female figurative artists are invited to submit work.
You probably are familiar with the Women Painting Women blog and the various shows that have been popping up over the last few years. There was the Robert Lange Studios show in 2010, the Principle Gallery, WPW: Expedition and Beyond show in 2012 and this fall, 2013 the WPW: (R)evolution show at Principle Gallery.

Some of the artists involved with WPW had an idea to encourage artists, galleries and museums to host their own WPW shows concurrently with the Sept. 2013, Principle Gallery WPW:(R)evolution Exhibit.

Principle Gallery Opening!

Women Painting Women - The Expedition and Beyond opening on April 13, 2012 in Alexandria, Virginia, was great fun.
American Art Collector Ad, April 2012
American Art Collector preview article, April 2012
Twelve of the thirteen artists who's work is on display were in attendance. (We missed you Kate Stone.)
It was a great experience for the artists and their new collectors. How often are the artists, their models and their collectors in the same room?

Here are the happy new owners of The Three Fates, and my models for the painting, Diane Feissel, Sadie Valeri and Alia El-Bermani.

It's always a treat to meet new collectors and to have an opportunity to ask them why they relate to the work. After meeting Diana and Chip I have no doubt The Three Fates is going to a good home.

They enjoyed meeting the models/artists, and getting everyone's autographs in the catalog of the exhibition. The catalog is still available and on sale for $15.85 (marked down from $19.00). The publisher, MagCloud is having a spring sale through May 13, 2012.

It was pretty much standing room only and the air was crackling with awesome energy.

My daughter Carly, and my friend, Washington, DC area
artist Tricia Ratliff.

Tricia did a wonderful interview on her blog, Agile Arts Journal, of Diane, Sadie and Alia, the three Women Painting Women bloggers. Check it out, it has some great insight about the show.

I went back the next day to take some pictures of the installation with out the crowd.
